چکیده

This paper presents the results of preliminary investigations of globular moss growth on the surface of Falljökull, a temperate outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap, Southern Iceland. Supraglacial debris has provided a basis for moss colonisation and several large (>500m) patches of moss growth (Racomitrium spp.) are observed on the surface of the glacier. Each area of moss-colonised supraglacial debris shows a down-slope increase in sphericity and moss cushion size and a decrease in percentage surface coverage of moss-colonised and bare clasts. It is suggested that moss growth on supraglacial debris allows preferential down-slope movement of clasts through an associated increase in both overall mass and sphericity. Thermal insulation by moss cushions protects the underlying ice surface from melt, and the resulting ice pedestals assist in down-slope sliding and toppling of moss cushions. The morphology and life cycle of supraglacial globular mosses is therefore not only closely linked to the presence and distribution of supraglacial debris, but also appears to assist in limited down-glacier transport of this debris. This research highlights both the dynamic nature of the interaction of mosses with supraglacial sedimentary systems and the need for a detailed consideration of their role within the wider glacial ecosystem.

Jökulhlaups in Iceland : sources, release and drainage

Jökulhlaups in Iceland may originate from marginal or subglacial sources of water melted by atmospheric processes, permanent geothermal heat or volcanic eruptions. Glacier-volcano interactions produce meltwater that either drains toward the glacier margin or accumulates in subglacial lakes. Accumulated meltwater drains periodically in jökulhlaups from the subglacial lakes and occasionally durin...

Impact of Atlantic salmon cage culture on sediment chemistry in Mjoifjordur, Iceland

Impact of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) cage culture in Mjoifjordur, Eastern Iceland on the chemistry of the sediment was investigated. Sediment samples were collected using a Shipek grab in December 2003. A core sub-sample was taken from each grab for analyzing total organic matter, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and phosphorus in different depths from three stations at various distances...

Structural evolution triggers a dynamic reduction in active glacier length during rapid retreat: Evidence from Falljökull, SE Iceland

Over the past two decades Iceland’s glaciers have been undergoing a phase of accelerated retreat set against a backdrop of warmer summers and milder winters. This paper demonstrates how the dynamics of a steep outlet glacier in maritime SE Iceland have changed as it adjusts to recent significant changes in mass balance. Geomorphological evidence from Falljökull, a high-mass turnover temperate g...

Recent, very rapid retreat of a temperate glacier in SE Iceland

Iceland’s glaciers are particularly sensitive to climate change, and their margins respond to trends in air temperature. Most Icelandic glaciers have been in retreat since c. 1990, and almost all since 1995. Using ice-front measurements, photographic and geomorphological evidence, we examined the record of ice-front fluctuations of Virkisjökull–Falljökull, a steep high-mass-turnover outlet glac...
